Ocean voyage on Classic Three Masted Bark Europa
Rotterdam – At the beginning of May 2012, after many wanderings in the Southern Hemisphere, the Dutch three masted bark “Europa” starts her voyage North bound in Cape Town, South Africa. On this ship, fitted with a late 19th century type rigging, you will not find any winches. Every line on deck is managed manually. Who wants to join on a leg can register and join an international guest crew. Prior sailing experience is not necessary.
The 100 year old Grand Lady follows the traditional sailing routes where trade winds prevail. During the ocean voyages several islands will be visited like St. Helena, Ascension Island and Horta on the Azores. Life on board the is the ideal way for a temporarily escape of the rushed land life with cell phones and social media.
33 meters high
To furl the sails, setting the rig for the studding sails and maintenance the crew and guest crew will climb into the rig to do the job. High up in the mast is the best place to be for a marvellous sight out on sea and whale spotting.
Napoleon
En route the ship will visit St. Helena, a small sub tropical island that is especially known as the last place for Napoleon during his exile.
The next stop will be Ascension Island, a volcanic island with beautiful beaches. This island is known for the sea turtles from Brazil who lay their eggs on the beaches.
Sail St. Malo
After a last stop in Horta, Azoren the ship arrives in St. Malo, France. Here a fleet of Tall Ships gathered for the start of the Tall Ship Races 2012. A unique opportunity to take part and join the crew in this international fleet. Follow the ship, log book of the captain and adventurers on board, on www.barkeuropa.com
